Hey all! Looks like I am second so if you haven’t, go back and read Kevin from Roll On’s article about the Grievous starter deck and how to upgrade it!
For this article we will be looking at Ahsoka Tano, Snips (TWI 11)! Throughout all of my Star Wars gaming career, I have always loved playing the light side and using people with lightsabers. So I instantly hopped on the hero side for this set in the 2p starter!
Here's a look at the Ahsoka leader and her starter deck list!
I really LOVE a lot of the cards in this deck as there are a few that I am very excited to try out in Premier. So I want to highlight a few.
Starting off, let us look at the starter exclusive cards:
332nd Stalwart (TWI 240) - This is probably the least exciting starter card for me. If Coordinate is online, you get a 2/3 for 1 cost, which is pretty great! But I am worried Coordinate will come and go and your opponent will have a good chance to kill him when he is just a 1/2. I think Soldier of the 501st (TWI 141) is just a better card that plays a similar role. (Which it should be since it has two aspects on it!)
Ahsoka’s Padawan Lightsaber (TWI 248) - This upgrade alone is reason to play Ahsoka! Both leaders have great unique upgrades for themselves. (Grievous has his Wheel Bike.)
This is similar to the Hotshot DL-44 Blaster (SHD 174) from Set 2, but you lose the ability to play it from your resources with Smuggle. What you gain, though, is the ability to just pay 1 resource and still do an attack, whereas the hotshot only attacks if played with smuggle!
This saber also lets you swing with ANY unit when played on Ahsoka, not just Ahsoka herself. The flexibility is great and expect this to have some blow out turns especially when Ahsoka flips and has Coordinate online.
Anakin Skywalker, Maverick Mentor (TWI 147) - We love 5-cost 6/6 units! I do wish he did a little bit more, but I found Coordinate decks do love card draw. You can be dumping your hand a lot to make sure you have 3 units on the board so getting more can definitely help. I think he demands an answer from your opponent so will never be a bad play, but you might be hoping for more on your (Ahsoka) flip turn.
Captain Rex, Lead by Example (TWI 97) - So you said you like Coordinate right? Rex will be a great way to keep Coordinate online post flip turn. He enables Ahsoka to be an absolute beatdown and gives you 8/8 worth of stats spread across 3 units! I love playing him and getting 3 units out on the board!
Moving past the starter cards, I want to shout out some other great cards you will definitely want to play if you draw them!
Admiral Yularen, Advising Caution (TWI 92) - Sadly he is only a 1-of in the starter deck, but adding +1 defense to ALL heroism units is going to be amazing! He has 5 health himself and also features Restore 1!
We have 23 heroism units in the deck, our leader Ahsoka, and cards like the event Drop In (TWI 251) that create heroic Clone tokens. Yularen will have plenty of stats to give out!
Shaak Ti, Unity Wins Wars (TWI 94) - She is another card that can make your tokens run wild! She gives all token units +1 attack and creates a Clone Token On Attack! She will be great at keeping your board big and threatening. She is a bit slow, but two-player starter games can be a bit slower and you should be able to attack with her!
Clone Commander Cody, Commanding the 212th (TWI 114) - BUFF YOUR UNITS! We love to see more buffs! I do worry Cody being a 4/4 for 5-cost will have him die too fast, but with the threat of giving all your units an extra 1/1 in stats and Overwhelm means he can swing games very fast if not killed!
So let us start to look at how we can improve the decklist! For our first upgrade we are going to look at how we can upgrade the deck with only using Twilight of the Republic cards!
If you are just hopping into Star Wars: Unlimited with this set, this should be a great starting point!
For this update I mostly wanted to try and jam in most of the good clone stuff from Command Aggression! I also tried to stay at 3x of all the starter cards, but – sorry, 332nd – I just couldn’t keep you over the 501st!
These changes now give you 12 true Turn 1 plays with 501st, Echo, Valiant ARC Trooper (TWI 90), Anakin's Interceptor, Where the Fun Begins (TWI 142) and Phase I Clone Troopers (TWI 241).
With Republic Tactical Officer (TWI 91), you obviously want to use him to buff other attackers, and Coruscant Guard (TWI 106) you will want to ambush him in using Coordinate. But using either as a 3/2 on Turn 1 is fine, too!
From there you can play a really powerful card in Huyang, Enduring Instructor (TWI 110) or Yularen to help buff your board up and keep your opponent from easily turning off Coordinate!
Republic ARC-170 (TWI 111) is a solid but not amazing unit, but a 3/4 in space for 3 resources is something that can put in work! Batch Brothers (TWI 144) will do great work at keeping one body on the board too!
At 4-cost we still just really hope for Shaak Ti (and wish we had Energy Conversion Lab [SOR 22]!), but one card that has grown on me is In Defense of Kamino (TWI 129). I dismissed it at first, but it can be really punishing for your opponent to deal with this. Either they kill your units and you replace them, or you get to heal for a good amount with Restore!
From there we have our bigger units with Cody, Anakin, Rex and Tranquility, Inspiring Flagship (TWI 246) all from the starter deck. Just bumping Cody up to 3!
To wrap up, here is what I would start with for Ahsoka Command deck going into Set 3!
There isn’t too much difference but bringing in ECL (Energy Conversion Lab) as your base makes cards like Shaak Ti and Aayla Secura, Master of the Blade (TWI 96) very good for your deck. Shaak guaranteeing a Clone or Aayla making sure she doesn’t take back damage will be huge!
I did have to sneak a Force Throw (SOR 167) in there since I love that card and the leader has Force trait…
For simplicity I tried to keep the core of the deck there, but I brought in Battlefield Marines (SOR 95) because 3/3s are awesome!
I brought in Green Squadron A-Wings (SOR 141) and Red Three, Unstoppable (SOR 144) to change things up in space.
Now imagine having Red Three, Yularen, and Shaak Ti all out! Those clones will hit hard! Of course your opponent will be interacting with your board, so its unlikely they are all ever out together for very long, but we can dream!
I really am excited to build Ahsoka and play her in Premier! I know the response is usually "just play Sabine Wren, Galvanized Revolutionary (SOR 14)." BUT, I am really hoping Ahsoka can carve herself out as an aggro deck that is a bit more swarm as compared to Sabine finishing with Poe Dameron, Quick to Improvise (SHD 153) and Wrecker, BOOM! (SHD 154)
Also think it is worth looking at Ahsoka in Cunning to get some really get aggressive cards along with things like Spark of Rebellion (SOR 200)!
However you build her – or any leader – I wish you the best of luck as we get into Set 3! I could not be more excited!
